This was a lesson about contemporary composer Osvaldo’s Golijov’s clarinet quintet, The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind. To get into the spirit of the music, our own Nurit Pacht teaches the kids how to dance the hora at Hutchinson Elementary School in Pelham, NY.
This concert is the culmination of a one week ClassNotes residency at Leon High School. ClassNotes musicians visited almost 700 students in history, orchestra and chorus classes and interactively explored the role of music in the holocaust. On this final concert, ClassNotes artists performed compositions by Gideon Klein (1919-1945) and Hans Krasa (1899-1944.)
In the second part of ClassNotes’ residency on the role of music in the Holocaust in Tallahassee Florida, violinist Sharon Roffman leads Leon High school students in the pit orchestra of Cobb Middle school’s production of Brundibar, an opera by Hans Krasa that was performed 55 times in the Terezin concentration camp.
